Riverine Flood Modelling - Coimbra

This animation shows results from a 100 year flood in Coimbra. MOHID Land was set up, dividing the simulate area in two sub areas: (i) one upstream to the “Açude de Coimbra" and (ii) one downstream. Infiltration was calculated using the Green Ampt approach and soil sealing was estimated from existing building and streets, using detailed information provided by the City of Coimbra. MOHID Land was calibrated and validated using data from local hydrological stations. Colors in this animation show the water depth along time. All preprocessing and post processing was performed with MOHID Studio.

Urban Flood Modelling - Lisbon

This animation shows results from a 100 year flood in Lisbon. MOHID Land was set up for the basin the drains to center of Lisbon with a high resolution computational mesh (grid size < 5m). Infiltration was calculated from soil characteristics and soil sealing was estimated from existing building and streets, using detailed information provided by the City of Lisbon. MOHID Land was connected, using OpenMI, to the SWMM model. Inflow into the sewer system is modeled through street gutters and return flow from SWMM to MOHID Land occurs through manholes. Colors in this animation show the water depth along time. All preprocessing and post processing was performed with MOHID Studio.

Riverine Flood Modelling - Oporto

This animation shows results from a 100 year flood in Oporto. Results were generated with MOHID Water, using a curvilinear mesh. At the open sea boundary tide were imposed and at the land boundary the river discharge with a flow up to to 15000m3/s. Color on the map shows the water depth and arrow represent intensity and direction of the water velocity. Small graphs at the right show imposed sea water level, imposed river discharge and water level at “Cais dos Banhos”. All pre and post processing has been performed with MOHID Studio.

Integrated Catchment Modelling – Pernambuco, Brazil

This setup, made in a small catchment in Pernambuco, Brazil, shows how MOHID Land and MOHID Water can be used together in order to study catchments in an integrated way. In the watershed 5 discharges have been placed randomly (blue markers), each discharging water with a flow rate of 1m3/s and a concentration of 1e3 (generic property). Flow is routed downstream, where it ends up in a small reservoir, located on the right. In this fictitious setup, initially all river channels are completely dry and the water in the reservoir as an initial concentration 0. The generic property has associated a first order decay rate of 3 hours. The animation shows the evolution of the concentration over time and allows observing some interesting featured like model integration, first order decay, property mixing, routing under difficult numerical conditions and effects of backwater. All pre and post processing tasks have been done with MOHID Studio.

Dam Break Simulation – Southern Portugal

This animation shows results from a ficticious dam break simulation performed with MOHID Land. The Dam is located at the lower left corner of the image. The goal of this animation was to show the ability of MOHID Land to perform 2D overland flow simulations under rough numerical conditions. All pre and post processing has been performed with MOHID Studio.

Tsunami Simulation – Coast of Japan

This animation shows results from a simulation the simulation of the Tsunami which occurred on 11 of March of 2011 in front of the Japanese Coast. Model simulations are based on a fictitious scenario. MOHID Water was setup with a nested approach and in the outer domain the model was initialized with an initial shift of the water level of 10m. All pre and post processing has been performed with MOHID Studio.

Marine Traffic & Hydrodynamics

This animation shows marine traffic and hydrodynamics in front of the Southern Portuguese Coast. Hydrodynamic results were obtained from the operational model for the Portuguese Coast (http://forecast.maretec.org/). Data download is processed by Action Server and data visualization is performed by a special plugin for MOHID Studio.

Weather Forecast Data Processing

This animation shows air temperature and wind velocity prediction for the Northern Atlantic and Europe. Data is produced by the Global Forecast System (GFS), downloaded and processed with Action Server (conversion from GRIB to HDF5). Data visualization is performed with MOHID Studio.
